The basics: rudiments

In rudimental drumming, a form of percussion music, a drum rudiment is one of a number of relatively small patterns which form the foundation for more extended and complex drumming patterns.

There are a bunch of different routines, exercises and drum patterns to build up your
4 way independance - left arm, right arm, left leg, right leg - and it takes time!

Find some practice patterns here: Drums for dummies (I also bought myself a hardcopy of the book, but I did not end up making much use of it)

Drum school app looks interesting. Also did not make much use - I think you can find similar videos for free on YouTube.

Practicing along with backing music

The tricky thing about drums and rhythm & percussion instruments is transcribing music - since sheet music is hardly available for drums.

So for this I often turn to YouTube for drum covers and/or drum tutorials.

Tools for learning & practising

  • Metronome app on your phone.

  • musicspeedchanger.com - Chrome extension to slow down and loop sections of YouTube videos

Something to practice on

My suggestion: I'd buy a used electronic drum off from FB Marketplace. $400-600 AUD. A friend can help discern and spot you a good deal.

Ear protection when playing on acoustic kits

  • I use (various) pairs of IEMs from... AliExpress
  • If not, Etymotic ETY Plugs ER20 High Fidelity Earplugs
